Emi Martinez is poised to join Chelsea from Aston Villa for £7.5million - the fourth deal involving the clubs this summer. The Argentina goalkeeper has been surplus to requirements at Villa Park since the club signed Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier this month. It means Martinez‚ Lucas Digne‚ Ollie Watkins and Youri Tielemans should all have left by the end of the transfer window - and they were four of Villa's highest earners.

TOM COLLOMOSSE IN SALZBURG: The UEFA Super Cup belongs to Paris Saint-Germain but Aston Villa left Salzburg with something far more precious than a piece of pre-season silverware. Between them‚ teenagers Brian Madjo and George Hemmings have made just six competitive appearances for Villa. Yet both frightened the life out of the back-to-back Champions League winners and on this evidence‚ they will be given plenty more opportunities by Unai Emery. They may have sold £150million worth of talent in Morgan Rogers‚ Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne since winning the Europa League and have doubts over the future of other key players. There is nothing quite like teenagers stepping up to the mark‚ though‚ and their performances will give Villa plenty of encouragement ahead of their Premier League opener at Brighton on August 23.

TOM COLLOMOSSE AT THE CITY GROUND: Emery was raging at the lack of intervention from the men on VAR duty‚ Tiago Martins and Andre Narciso. In the second half‚ VAR did intervene when Omari Hutchinson's cross struck Lucas Digne's hand‚ allowing Chris Wood to score the only goal from the penalty spot late in the second half.

NATHAN SALT: Despite being on the wrong end of multiple game-changing decisions‚ Newcastle United still managed to navigate their way past Aston Villa to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup. But the story of the night was not Sandro Tonali's brace but the decision-making of Kavanagh and his linesmen‚ specifically the decision to award a free-kick after Lucas Digne committed handball more than three yards inside the penalty area.
