Jack Grealish has leapt to the defence of former Man City and England team-mate Raheem Sterling after he was subjected to brutal criticism on social media. Sterling made his first appearance for Feyenoord off the bench in their 2-1 home triumph over Telstar on Sunday but looked understandably rusty after nine months away from competitive action. Having been exiled by Chelsea before mutually agreeing a contract termination of his £325‚000-a-week deal last month‚ Sterling still has a way to go before reaching full fitness again.
John Terry has admitted that he was left 'frustrated' after being overlooked for a role assisting Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane during his brief stint in the dugout last month and questioned whether the club's ownership or sporting directors had ruled him out deliberately. The Blues legend holds a part-time consultancy role within Chelsea's academy set-up‚ working alongside McFarlane with the under-21s and under-18s. But the former club captain was not given a role when McFarlane was given an important internal promotion following the departure of Enzo Maresca‚ which in turn led to facing off with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.
GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE! State of play in the race for the top five as Man Utd‚ Chelsea‚ Liverpool and Aston Villa fight for place in the Champions League
OLIVER HOLT AT HILL DICKINSON STADIUM: The resurrection of Manchester United under Michael Carrick continued on a damp‚ dank Monday evening on the banks of the Mersey when his club found a way to conquer new ground in enemy territory. United's scrappy‚ gutsy‚ hard-fought 1-0 victory was their fifth win in six games since Carrick took charge of the club and lifted them above Chelsea into fourth place in the Premier League. They are now only three points behind Aston Villa‚ who are third. It was United's first appearance at Everton's magnificent new Hill Dickinson Stadium and they did not waste any time breaking their duck here. It felt for a long time as if the match was drifting towards a draw but United ended that impression with a brilliant second-half break-away goal.
The former Chelsea and Crystal Palace midfielder‚ 30‚ was placed in a neck brace and onto a stretcher having been left in a bloody mess following a challenge from opposing goalkeeper Edoardo. He had challenged for a ball with the Parma goalkeeper during his side's 1-0 defeat in Serie A ‚ and he hit the deck as team-mates rushed to him to check on him. After a lengthy period of play that saw the star checked out onto the pitch‚ he was eventually placed onto the stretcher and taken to hospital for further checks.
IAN HERBERT AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: The front of Chelsea's shirts displayed the nondescript logo of the AI firm they've found as a temporary sponsor and so much of this place still seems to exude impermanence and uncertainty. Liam Rosenior seemed to be sharing a dug-out seat with his assistant‚ Justin Walker‚ who stood up to vacate it each time the manager wanted to take the weight off his feet. Burnley's late equaliser - striker Zian Flemming unmarked as he ran to meet James Ward Prowse's corner - saw half-hearted boos greet the final whistle and it could have been even worse. Burnley's Jacob Brunn Larsen sent a header over the bar from a second Ward Prowse corner‚ moments after the first. The late heist was precisely what Scott Parker's side had planned for and‚ given Chelsea's vast dominance having taken such an early lead‚ succumbing to it was criminal.
