New Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has insisted he 'never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women' after a backlash from fans over his previous comments regarding Mason Greenwood. In his first club interview since his appointment earlier this week‚ De Zerbi was invited to respond to fans who have concerns over comments he made while Marseille boss when coaching Greenwood. Greenwood had joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 from Manchester United‚ two years after he was arrested on suspicion of rape‚ assault‚ and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Tottenham have entrusted their Premier League survival in the hands of Roberto De Zerbi after officially appointing the Italian manager on a huge five-year contract. Spurs‚ who are perilously floating just a point above the relegation zone with seven games to go‚ sacked Igor Tudor on Sunday just 44 days after the interim manager arrived in north London. Former Brighton boss De Zerbi had been available since his exit from Marseille in February and was understood to have been reluctant to take the Spurs job immediately‚ preferring to join the club in the summer.
Spurs have been searching for their fourth head coach in 295 days after Igor Tudor's exit and De Zerbi is the top candidate amid a series of talks between the two parties. The Italian‚ 46‚ has drawn objections from some sections of supporters for his role in rebuilding Mason Greenwood 's reputation at Marseille and is also thought to be keen to wait until the summer‚ but there appears to be no time to waste. If appointed‚ the former Brighton boss will have seven games to save his new side from a disastrous relegation to the Championship before looking to kick on in the top flight next season.
Tottenham want Roberto De Zerbi to take over as their manager immediately and are making moves to convince the former Marseille and Brighton boss to save them from relegation.
Marseille's sporting director was reportedly keen to offload Mason Greenwood last summer amid concerns over his commitment and work rate‚ a new report has claimed. Former Man United forward Greenwood had finished as the joint top scorer in Ligue 1 last season alongside PSG's Ousmane Dembele‚ with the forwards netting 21 goals. This was aided by Greenwood's late season form‚ where he scored six goals in eight matches to help Marseille qualify for the Champions League.
The 42-year-old was once one of his country's finest centre-backs and helped the Catalan club to two LaLiga titles‚ two Spanish Cups and European glory during a successful career. Last year‚ fans were shocked to see him working at Intersport‚ a major chain of sport shops in his homeland‚ as a manager in their football department in a branch between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille.
