Roberto De Zerbi‚ who has been linked with the Manchester United job‚ had been under increasing pressure following the French side's dismal exit from the Champions League. Marseille were then thrashed 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday to leave them three points adrift of the automatic Champions League places in Ligue 1.
The French side were knocked out of the competition on Wednesday night on goal difference following their 3-0 defeat by Club Brugge. Alan Shearer has warned Chelsea frontrunner Liam Rosenior he must surpass Enzo Maresca's achievements if he it to survive at a 'bonkers' club. Rosenior has been viewed the leading contender to succeed Maresca at Stamford Bridge following the Italian's shock New Year's Day departure. The 41-year-old currently coaches Strasbourg‚ with the Ligue 1 side also run by Chelsea's owners BlueCo.
Mason Greenwood was reportedly targeted with missiles after he scored against Nice in a feisty Riviera derby clash on Friday night. Greenwood netted twice as Marseille thrashed their rivals 5-1 to go top of Ligue 1 and continue their impressive start to the season. But the game hit a flashpoint after Greenwood scored his first goal to put Roberto De Zerbi's side 2-0 up in the first half.
Southampton have sacked manager Will Still following a disastrous start to the season. The Saints only appointed Still in May‚ which came after the 33-year-old had gained rave reviews for his work with Reims and Lens in France's Ligue 1. However‚ the move hasn't worked out and Still's side are 21st in the Championship following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to Preston‚ a third loss in a row. They have just 12 points from 13 games despite being tipped as one of the promotion favourites.
