Arteta's side maintained their 100 per cent record in their title defence on Saturday night thanks to goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Bukayo Saka‚ but it could have been a very different story. The score was 0-0 when Sunderland were awarded a penalty after referee John Brooks adjudged Ezri Konsa to have dragged Dan Ballard to the floor at a Sunderland corner. After a VAR check‚ the decision stood‚ but David Raya dived low to his left to keep out Enzo Le Fee's effort.
ISAAN KHAN: Arsenal are well primed to make that final step. They were‚ after all‚ only a few kicks from glory in May‚ and have strengthened further this summer with additions such as Bruno Guimaraes‚ Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa. But how do they get over that final hurdle?
Aston Villa's new £25million signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis has been left out of Unai Emery's Champions League squad‚ just two days after expressing his 'excitement' at the prospect of playing in Europe's elite competition. The 24-year-old centre-half joined Villa from Southampton on transfer deadline day‚ brought in to strengthen Emery's defensive options following Ezri Konsa's £55m move to Premier League champions Arsenal. Harwood-Bellis‚ who tied the knot with Roy Keane's daughter Leah earlier this summer‚ admitted he 'can't wait' to play in the Champions League during his first interview with his new club on Tuesday.
England defender Konsa‚ 28‚ has signed a four year contract with an option for a further year with the Premier League champions.
OLIVER HOLT: The curtain will rise at the Principality Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the champions will walk out on to the stage ahead of the Community Shield. Arsenal 's cast will not look radically different. There will be a few extras and one or two new stars but nothing dramatic. There has been no need for drama. Just steady growth. Arsenal did not need to have a spectacular summer in the transfer market. It was important that they strengthened from a position of strength and they have started that process calmly by recruiting Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. With two weeks of the window remaining‚ there is an argument that it is the best signing of the close season so far. Other arrivals are being discussed. The champions need reinforcements in defence where long-term injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are a concern and have led to an as-yet fruitless pursuit of Aston Villa 's Ezri Konsa.

Thomas Tuchel was wrong to suggest England do not have the 'DNA' to control possession when many of the nation's best technical players were either left at home or not used at the tournament‚ Gary Neville has argued. Tuchel has come under fire for opting to take off goalscorer Anthony Gordon moments after he gave England the lead‚ bringing on Ezri Konsa and switching to a back five‚ inviting Argentina to attack the Three Lions' back line. Despite Argentina scoring twice to win the game within a few minutes of his switches‚ Tuchel has defended his tactical decisions‚ saying: 'In this moment my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us.'
England had taken the lead in the 56th minute through Anthony Gordon‚ but opted to try and hold onto their advantage rather than add to it. Tuchel went to a back five that served him so well in the last-16 win over Mexico‚ with Ezri Konsa coming on for the goal scorer to join Reece James‚ John Stones‚ Marc Guehi and Djed Spence. They found themselves on the defensive‚ and Dan Burn was later introduced too when Reece James left the field injured.
SIMON JONES: The Premier League champions know Villa need to sell players this summer. They are reluctant to lose their main man Morgan Rogers‚ who is also firmly on Arsenal's radar‚ but would consider bids for others. Konsa has been discussed as a possible addition for Arsenal's squad owing to his ability to play centre back and fill in at right back. He has two years left on contract and Arsenal believe he could be prised away for around £35m but talks have yet to take place. Villa value him considerably higher.
