IAN LADYMAN AT ST JAMES' PARK: A goal to rejuvenate a football team and perhaps to kick start a season. A goal to remind the naysayers that there is beauty still to be found in the Premier League. Newcastle were not supposed to win this game. Not after having a player - Jacob Ramsey - sent off unjustly for a dive that never was just before half-time. Once the Manchester United midfielder Casemiro equalised an Anthony Gordon penalty that had quickly followed the red card‚ it seemed inevitable that Eddie Howe's team - in such poor form of late - would wither. But despite all the over-reactive talk of falling standards and levels of entertainment‚. football at the top level remains wonderfully unpredictable and not only did Newcastle somehow retain the upper hand against a poor United team that looked short of ideas‚ they struck to win the game right at the end of a second half in which they played with courage and - from somewhere - energy.
Newcastle's stunning first half against Qarabag was slightly soured by an apparent row between captain Kieran Trippier and four-goal hero Anthony Gordon. The Premier League side produced a flawless opening 45 minutes in their Champions League play-off first leg to lead 5-0 courtesy of Gordon's four goals and Malick Thiaw's effort. Gordon scored two goals from the penalty spot and it appears the latter one caused some tension between the goalscorer and Trippier over who was going to take it.
CRAIG HOPE AT ANFIELD: Eddie Howe had three strikers sat behind him at Anfield. Two of his own‚ signed at great expense in the summer but benched in favour of winger Anthony Gordon at centre-forward. Alexander Isak was also there‚ the one he lost to Liverpool and who is currently injured. But it was the one on the pitch‚ the one he really wanted‚ who settled this game. 'I've tried to sign him twice‚' said Howe on Friday. 'He has got a bit of everything. He has great movement‚ can score with both feet and dribbles really well.'
