Five-star Scotland Under-21s sweep aside Azerbaijan

Follow Daily Mail Sport's live blog of Manchester United's Champions League return‚ as Michael Carrick's side take on Sabah of Azerbaijan at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick admits that having two days less than Manchester City to prepare for Sunday's Old Trafford derby isn't 'ideal' for Manchester United. While City opened their Champions League campaign with a win in Porto on Tuesday night‚ United face Sabah of Azerbaijan at Old Trafford in a one-off Thursday slot. It has given Enzo Maresca more time to work with his squad before the 199th Manchester derby this weekend‚ and Carrick has no choice but to accept the situation.

Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon speak out after on-field Newcastle row

Newcastle's stunning first half against Qarabag was slightly soured by an apparent row between captain Kieran Trippier and four-goal hero Anthony Gordon. The Premier League side produced a flawless opening 45 minutes in their Champions League play-off first leg to lead 5-0 courtesy of Gordon's four goals and Malick Thiaw's effort. Gordon scored two goals from the penalty spot and it appears the latter one caused some tension between the goalscorer and Trippier over who was going to take it.

Wirtz had a slow start to life at Liverpool after his £116million move in the summer‚ not registering a goal or assist in the Premier League until the start of December‚ but he has now started to pick up in terms of his form. He has now scored four goals in his last seven league matches‚ while also netting against Qarabag in the Champions League last week. Carragher had suggested that Wirtz wasn't a 'great' player because of the time he took to adapt‚ saying in October: 'If I'm being honest‚ if I think of the great foreign signings - Sami Hyppia‚ Mo Salah‚ Sadio Mane‚ Luis Suarez‚ Didi Hamann - they all hit the ground running.'

Newcastle United learn dates for Qarabag tie as club release statement on unpopular kick off time

Newcastle will have to bypass Qarabag for a spot in the Champions League final 16‚ after Eddie Howe's side were drawn against the Azerbaijan team ahead of their play-off tie next month. Qarabag may feel a sense of trepidation facing off with Premier League opposition for the second European match in a row‚ after being thumped 6-0 by Liverpool in their final game of the league phase. But unlike their defeat at Anfield‚ the club will take on Eddie Howe's players on home turf - which will mean Newcastle will have to travel 8‚000 miles midweek for their match on either February 17 or 18.
