Palmer and Welbeck score twice each as Chelsea come from behind to beat Leeds in Carabao Cup thriller

Valentin Barco scored the fifth to avert an anxious finale and Welbeck's second‚ deflecting a mis-hit Barco shot past hapless goalkeeper Michael Zetterer‚ booked Chelsea into the fourth round - but high-flying Hull City might fancy their chances of another shock result here in the Premier League on Saturday.

Alonso praises Welbeck and Henderson's "great influence" as leaders in the Chelsea side

KIERAN GILL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: We love a transfer update in today's world of club-to-club talks and verbal agreements and sources whispering this and that‚ but there is nothing quite as clear as a surprise absentee on a match day. It smacks of something happening behind the scenes‚ and Manchester City target Enzo Fernandez was nowhere to be seen at Stamford Bridge‚ neither in the team nor on the bench nor in the stands supporting his team-mates in this Carabao Cup second-round victory. That was despite Xabi Alonso telling us a day previous that he intended on using him against League One visitors Luton. Chelsea did not need him. They won by two goals‚ with Danny Welbeck scoring and Hakeem Odoffin sending Estevao Willian's shot into his own net. They arguably should have won by six with the chances that Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers had.

Xabi Alonso will have to make sense of a Chelsea squad stuffed with a jaw-dropping 46 senior players ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season‚ according to the club's website - with the number rising as new signings join the pack. The incoming Blues manager has already overseen a number of eye-catching transfers since arriving at Stamford Bridge at the start of July‚ including the £117million deal for Morgan Rogers‚ and additional signings including Marco Palestra‚ Danny Welbeck‚ Maxence Lacroix and Jordan Henderson. But worryingly for the west London side‚ there have been few outgoings‚ with the only confirmed departures Marc Cucurella for Real Madrid‚ Tyrique George's permanent signing for Everton‚ and loans for Alejandro Garnacho‚ Jesse Derry‚ and Kendry Paez.

Chelsea have confirmed their signing of Jordan Henderson on a free transfer‚ after Brentford allowed the 36-year-old to terminate his contract a year earlier than expected. It comes two days after they secured the signature of Danny Welbeck‚ 35‚ from Brighton.
