Danny Welbeck proves double trouble as Brighton rock Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes
LEWIS STEELE AT AMEX 'Hey‚ Danny Welbeck‚' sang the Brighton fans. 'I wanna know how you scored that goal.' Not once but twice‚ the veteran forward scored to help Fabian Hurzeler's side to their biggest victory of the season and condemn faltering Liverpool and Arne Slot to another forgettable afternoon. A better song might have been: 'Hey‚ Danny Welbeck... I wanna know why you're not in the England squad.'
Darren Fletcher's side were knocked out of England's top cup competition at the first time of asking on Sunday night‚ with former Red Devil Danny Welbeck scoring one and setting up another in Brighton's 2-1 win. It means United were this season knocked out of both domestic cups at the first hurdle‚ having lost on penalties to League Two Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup at the start of the campaign.
CHRIS WHEELER AT OLD TRAFFORD: It's 44 years since the biggest club in English football last fell at the first hurdle of both domestic cup competitions. But having been humiliated by League Two Grimsby in the Carabao Cupin August‚ United were eliminated by the excellent Seagulls here thanks to goals from Brajan Gruda and former Old Trafford favourite Danny Welbeck. Still in peak form at the age of 35‚ it was Welbeck's eighth goal against United for Arsenaland Brighton since leaving his hometown club in 2014. He has been linked with his old club on a number of occasions since then‚ and would have been a far better bet than most of the expensive options United have explored over more than a decade.
NATHAN SALT AT OLD TRAFFORD: Manchester United have bowed out of every cup competition at the first time of asking as they tripped at the first hurdle in the FA Cup‚ losing 2-1 at home to Brighton. Goals from Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck did the damage and while Benjamin Sesko handed United a lifeline with a late header‚ it wasn't enough. It means Darren Fletcher has failed to win either of his two matches in charge as interim boss‚ with a caretaker manager until the end of the season expected to be appointed early this week.
