Chelsea striker prefers Premier League move - but may not have an option as Everton and Newcastle back away
KIERAN GILL AT THE ACCOR STADIUM IN SYDNEY: The 24-year-old was surprisingly ignored by Ancelotti in this summer‚ and in a friendly win over Western Sydney Wanderers‚ he replaced Liam Delap while his side were trailing 3-2.
KIERAN GILL: Monday‚ November 2‚ 2020. St George's Park‚ Burton-on-Trent. The FA Youth Cup final between Manchester City and Chelsea. It is 2-2 as we approach the 83rd minute. Morgan Rogers has already scored for City‚ a tidy finish to a low cross cut back by Liam Delap. Then Delap breaks behind. He shoots. The ball bobbles beyond Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and trickles towards the back post‚ where Cole Palmer is waiting. He taps in for 3-2 and that's that at the FA's national football centre. City win‚ Chelsea lose.
We know Liam Rosenior is not afraid of showing his squad footage of their acts of folly. After his big miss here‚ Liam Delap may have feared being tied to a chair and‚ in the style of Clockwork Orange‚ forced to watch his big miss over and over upon his return to Cobham. Initially‚ Delap did well. His closing down of Dillon Phillips was enough to block the Hull goalkeeper's clearance as the ball then bounced off the underside of the crossbar. It went so close to the goal-line that Delap thought it was in‚ lifting his arm in the air and looking towards the referee. The trouble is‚ the ball had not crossed the line‚ and Delap had wasted so much time believing it had that he reacted too late to the rebound. He should have shown some urgency by simply making sure it was in himself‚ and you suspect Rosenior will let him know that.
KIERAN GILL: Chelsea have reminded their players to wash their hands after a virus outbreak within the club which has struck down several of their stars and staff members. It was in a Thursday morning meeting when they spoke to their squad on the hygiene basics after Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens missed Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat by Arsenal because of illness. Both are still at home trying to recover in time for Saturday's Premier League visit of Brentford after they were described as having 'dangerously high temperatures'.
ANALYSIS BY KIERAN GILL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: An hour or so before kick-off‚ there was a fox on the loose inside Stamford Bridge‚ running in between the rows of seats in the East Stand. You did wonder whether Chelsea might need one of those in the box‚ given Enzo Maresca's starting line-up showed how he had zero strikers on the pitch. He had three on the bench in Liam Delap‚ Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu - four if we count the academy graduate Tyrique George - but none spearheading his attack.
Wayne Rooney hailed the Blues star as 'absolutely incredible' after Chelsea 's 3-0 Champions League demolition of Barcelona at Stamford Bridge. The former England captain singled out the left-back for special praise after he locked down teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and helped drive a statement victory. The Blues beat the LaLiga champions thanks to a Jules Kounde own goal and second-half strikes from Estevao and Liam Delap.
The west Londoners face a tough battle to secure an all-important spot in the top eight of the Champions League group standings‚ with tricky ties against Barcelona and Italian champions Napoli to come. Maresca has been desperate to utilise his expensively-assembled squad this season‚ but has been forced to contend with injuries to key players including Cole Palmer ‚ Enzo Fernandez and Liam Delap - a knock-on effect from their exertions at last summer's Club World Cup .
