Philippe Coutinho has confirmed his departure from boyhood club Vasco de Gama‚ citing that he is 'mentally exhausted' in an emotional statement on social media. Coutinho‚ 33‚ re-joined the Brazilian side on a permanent deal last year‚ following a short-loan spell during his stint at Aston Villa‚ and seemed likely to extend his stay at the club. However‚ the former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder has been booed by his own fans in recent weeks‚ most recently during a penalty shootout victory over second division side Volta Redonda in the Campeonato Carioca quarter-finals. Coutinho was substituted at half-time during the clash‚ and opted not to return to the bench to support his team-mates in the second half.
Philippe Coutinho‚ once one of football's most expensive players in history‚ is 'to tear up his contract' with Vasco da Gama. The 33-year-old's career has deteriorated and never reached the heights it promised after his £145million move from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018. Coutinho only re-joined his boyhood side Vasco on a permanent deal last year but it appears the chapter is already coming to an end after he was booed by his own fans.
