CHRIS WHEELER AT OLD TRAFFORD: Michael Carrick has done so much right since he became Manchester United's head coach‚ but even he needs the breaks to go his way every now and then. United were trailing to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford and in need of the inspiration that was starting to come from their irrepressible captain Bruno Fernandes when this game turned on its head eight minutes into the second half. Fernandes slipped a pass through for Matheus Cunha who turned Maxence Lacroix and raced towards goal. The Palace scorer instinctively grabbed Cunha by his right shoulder and he stayed on his feet just long enough to ensure he went down in the box.

When Cristiano Ronaldo was asked about his future in football in 2023‚ as a 38-year-old having not long started his venture at Al Nassr‚ he revealed his plan to one day become the owner of a football club. 'I don't rule out becoming a club owner‚' Ronaldo said. 'It's something I thought about a few years back. I probably would like to own a [football] club. I'm at the end of my career‚ two to three years maximum.' It's now been three years. On Thursday morning‚ Ronaldo's roadmap to retirement has become clearer‚ and he has done exactly what he said he would do. Ronaldo's ownership dream has come to fruition: he has purchased a 25 per cent stake in Spanish second-division side UD Almeria through his CR7 Sports Investments company.

With every passing game and each win‚ he is also making Ruben Amorim look a little foolish. For all that Carrick has done right since he was appointed head coach until the end of the season‚ it has only highlighted just how much Amorim got wrong during his turbulent 14-month reign at Old Trafford. In many ways‚ Carrick is the perfect antidote to the combustible Portuguese: a man who wins games on the pitch and minds what he says off it. Amorim was box office but‚ sadly‚ his team were not.
