Tensions during a hostile local derby in Brazil spilled over into their wildest extent on Sunday as 23 players were staggeringly sent off following a mass brawl between the two sets of teams and their staff. The match was the Campeonato Mineiro‚ a Brazilian state championship in Belo Horizonte‚ final between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro which the latter won 1-0. However‚ the result of the match was overshadowed by the unsavoury scenes on it as players and staff traded physical blows. The confrontation was sparked in second-half stoppage time when Atletico goalkeeper Everson pushed Christian to the ground after the Cruzeiro midfielder collided with him while chasing a loose ball.

CHRIS WHEELER AT OLD TRAFFORD: Michael Carrick has done so much right since he became Manchester United's head coach‚ but even he needs the breaks to go his way every now and then. United were trailing to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford and in need of the inspiration that was starting to come from their irrepressible captain Bruno Fernandes when this game turned on its head eight minutes into the second half. Fernandes slipped a pass through for Matheus Cunha who turned Maxence Lacroix and raced towards goal. The Palace scorer instinctively grabbed Cunha by his right shoulder and he stayed on his feet just long enough to ensure he went down in the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo produced a not often seen sight on the football pitch on Saturday as he missed a penalty. The 41-year-old had the chance to give Al-Nassr the lead in the 12th minute at Al-Fayha Club - who ex-Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling plays for - when his team-mate Mohamed Simakan had been fouled. It appeared a contentious decision and after a four-minute delay‚ Ronaldo stepped up to shoot but dragged his effort wide of the left-hand post.

CHRIS WHEELER: Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada claims that the latest financial results show the true benefit of the club's 'transformation' off the pitch. United's second quarter figures show that operating profit is up to £19.6million compared to £3.1m in the same quarter last year‚ even though the team are not playing in Europe for only the second time in 35 years and went out of both domestic cup competitions at the first hurdle. It means that United's total operating profit over the first two quarters and six months of this financial year is £32.2m compared to a £3.9m loss last year.

CHRIS WHEELER: Manchester United have no intention of re-negotiating a transfer fee for Marcus Rashford with Barcelona. The two clubs agreed a set price for Rashford when he moved to the Nou Camp from Old Trafford on loan last summer‚ giving the Catalans an option to pay £26million to make the deal permanent at the end of the season. Barca are also covering the entirety of Rashford's £315‚000-a-week wages. The 28-year-old England star has impressed in Spain‚ contributing 10 goals and 13 assists from his 34 appearances‚ and Barca are expected to trigger the transfer clause to keep him.

CHRIS WHEELER: Michael Carrick has many reasons as to why he wants to see Manchester United make it five wins in a row under him when they face West Ham on Tuesday night - but it's fair to say that enabling Frank Ilett to get a haircut is not high on his list of priorities. Ilett‚ otherwise known as The United Strand on social media‚ will be live-streaming during the game in the hope of ending a near 500-day wait.

CHRIS WHEELER AT OLD TRAFFORD: With every passing game and each win‚ Michael Carrick is making the job of managing Manchester United look rather easy. With every passing game and each win‚ he is also making Ruben Amorim look a little foolish. For all that Carrick has done right since he was appointed head coach until the end of the season‚ it has only highlighted just how much Amorim got wrong during his turbulent 14-month reign at Old Trafford. In many ways‚ Carrick is the perfect antidote to the combustible Portuguese: a man who wins games on the pitch and minds what he says off it. Amorim was box office but‚ sadly‚ his team were not.

When your father is one of the biggest names in world football‚ you pretty much have one of two options: embrace the spotlight or ignore it entirely. For decades‚ Jose Mourinho has cemented his place as one of the game's most celebrated managers‚ amassing trophies across PortugalSpain and England and providing the game with some of its most memorable moments in recent times. The man who boldly christened himself 'The Special One' upon arriving at Chelsea in 2004 has since dominated headlines not just for his tactical brilliance‚ but also for his theatrical touchline antics. His swagger‚ confidence‚ and flair for drama have made him a perennial media favorite‚ impossible to ignore on or off the pitch.
