Wirtz was one of the biggest movers in the Premier League last season but had a below-par season‚ with many giving him the benefit of the doubt considering it was his first season in the division. But he has continued to struggle this term too‚ and under a new manager‚ with the German yet to score and picking up just one assist in the six top flights matches so far this season. His performances have led to some questioning his place in the Liverpool team‚ and former Reds defender Carragher is now front and centre of that after Wirtz's showing against Manchester City on Sunday.

Wirtz‚ who cost Liverpool £116million a little over a year ago‚ has struggled to hit the ground running at Anfield and come under heavy criticism for his performances this season. Jamie Carragher has led the criticism‚ arguing that Wirtz's weekend performance against Bournemouth was 'one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt'. Hamann‚ meanwhile‚ has explained he expects Wirtz to leave the club.

Former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has admitted that Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz struggled to settle in at Anfield last season because the squad 'didn't care about football' following the death of Diogo Jota. Jota was tragically killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva in northern Spain in July 2025. The 28-year-old had been on his way to report to Merseyside for pre-season training. In the same summer‚ Liverpool purchased both Isak and Wirtz for a combined £241million. However‚ both players struggled in what was a difficult season for the Reds‚ as they finished fifth in the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool's summer signings from last year to do better or face being branded as the worst collection of transfers in Premier League history. The Reds spent £445million ahead of the 2025-26 campaign as they looked to defend their Premier League title won in 2024-25. Liverpool broke the Premier League record twice that summer - signing Florian Wirtz for £116m before then breaking that to sign Alexander Isak for £125m.

Gary Neville has warned Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak to improve and become more tenacious if they are to succeed as Liverpool players. The pair are the most expensive signings in the club's history with Wirtz's £116million price-tag only bettered by Isak's £125m transfer as a Premier League record signing. The pair endured underwhelming debut seasons at Liverpool last season as the club finished fifth‚ relinquishing their Premier League crown to Arsenal.

LIVERPOOL 2-4 LEEDS - THINGS WE LEARNED: In the Reds' final game of this pre-season tour‚ early goals from young defender Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz had Liverpool on their way to a perfect trip but‚ after both teams made half-time changes‚ Leeds vastly improved to triumph. At the home of NFL side Chicago Bears‚ two American football-style throw-ins undid Liverpool as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a brace.
